Over the years it has become clear to us that Amohela ho Spitskop Country Retreat and Conservancy is not only a " waypoint" but rather an important resting and feeding stop-over for many birds and butterflies during their long migration travels, both North and South bound.
It is always with joy that we greet each new wave of arrivals and then bid them bon-voyage a few days later.
Refreshed and well fed ready for the next leg of their journey. Some of them really travel a long way.
White Storks from Europe, Abdims Storks from West and north Africa, Amur Falcons from China, Steppe Buzzards from Russia and the Barn Swallows from Denmark.

The daughter of a third generation Free State farmer, I grew up in this wild beautiful place, where we wandered, my brother and I, across fields, swam in dams, rode a small pony called Brown up the mountain and then left him to graze peacefully, while we ascended to the top together with any number of springer spaniels in tow then raced down, gathered up Brown, and headed back to the farmhouse.

The fields were filled with wild flowers which we picked and presented to a mother who graciously put the sometimes wilted offerings in vases where they stood as a testament to our love of these wonderful wild plants.

There simply cannot be anything more luscious than fresh succulent cherries, and the very best cherries in South Africa are grown in the Ficksburg/Clocolan districts not far from Amohela ho Spitskop.

This is where much of the UTTER MAGIC of this wonderful Getaway, even and apart from the stunning self catering cottages, lies, in the iconic privately owned mountain, where guests can roam and explore, where you can come walk with us where once, long ago, Dinosaurs roamed.
