Lesotho-A stunningly beautiful day trip with awesome scenery

Posted on Sat September 16, 2017.

When you relax on your “deck-with-a-view” at Amohela ho Spitskop, your eyes are drawn to the awesome, majestic mountains beyond. These are indeed the Maluti ( Maloti) Mountains in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. A day trip to this stunning country is an absolute “MUST” for this is surely one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Lesotho is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1000 meters ( 3281 feet).   The country has a rich culture and a rugged beauty, snow covered for much of the winter months and a wonderland of beauty and wild flowers in the summer. The Sotho people laugh easily and are friendly and helpful.

NOTE: You need a valid passport to enter Lesotho.

The best place to enter Lesotho is at the quiet and beautiful Caledonspoort Border Post some  ¾  of an hour to an hour from Amohela through great  scenic beauty. The drive to Katse Dam is awe inspiring and scenically stunning. It is a long drive so you need to leave early to have time to stop, gaze at the beauty and take many pictures. A packed picnic lunch is advised as there is nowhere to buy food along the way.The road is tarred and in reasonable condition.

A day drive to Afriski Resort, also via Caledonspoort Border post,  is another stunningly beautiful day.  It lies some 82 kilometers into Lesotho, you wander past Kala and the entrance to Liphufung caves up to a high point, and there below you in a valley is the resort. At 3222 meters, the Sky Restaurant puts “Eating Out “ at another level ( no pun intended!) The restaurant provides for all tastes and has a dedicated kiddies menu as well.  The road is tarred and in reasonable condition.

Being high and cooler, the summer mountain wild flowers start to be at their best come the month of December and are incredibly beautiful, so give yourself time to stop and take some pictures at both the endless vistas of beauty as well as the flowers.
