About SkyWind Cottages

SkyWind Cottages, designed to fill a unique niche in our self catering accommodation, where, in today’s busy, noisy, hectic pace of life, many couples seek accommodation for just two, where they can spend time with each other in solitude and privacy.

The unpretentious barn style buildings sit quietly on the earth, comfortable in the rural farming environment of the eastern Free State Highlands. Built from hand hewn sandstone blocks, wood, corrugated iron, the exteriors belie the indulgent luxury of the interior of the cottages. Here the un-plastered sandstone block walls have been lime washed so they are tactile, velvety, the high beamed ceilings with exposed wooden beams create balance and space, cement painted floors and wood burning combustion fires all add to the SkyWind experience.

Re-claimed wooden pallets make up the screening walls at each cottage, and, in the areas around the cottages, we have gathered helichchrysum odoratissimum plants, a plant highly valued by herbalists, which grows in profusion on Spitskop, and planted these around the cottages. Indigenous shrubs and trees have been planted to grow strong and tall and will form screening green walls between the cottages, and, come the spring, we will encourage wild flowers and herbs to grow around the cottages, bringing birds and butterflies to visit.

The cottages are built on a ridge with awesome views over the scenic Eastern Free State to the majestic Maluti Mountains beyond, the view from the king size beds across the vast, quiet landscape creates a magical morning wake experience. The open plan spaciousness, with pampering baths and and enclosed showers and toilets, a fully equipped kitchen, a weber braai on the patio-with-a-view, all come together to define these awesome dwelling places for just two in indulgent quietness, space and luxury.

A selection of interesting magazines and books, an information brochure with bird check list, hiking trails/cycle /birding routes and information on the area and interesting places to eat, shop, day drives are supplied in each cottage. Another nice feature, although cottages are far enough apart for privacy, they are also close enough for two couples travelling together to enjoy both privacy and together time.
