| The dams at Amohela have just been re-stocked,
on August 18th, with beautiful fat feisty rainbow trout, the second stocking
of trout this winter.

Amohela ho Spitskop is a 310 hectare Country Retreat in the magnificent Eastern Free State Highlands, on the Clocolan/Ficksburg border. The Retreat has a 4 star grading in the self-catering category from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa and is the winner of the 2007 AA Award for the category Self Catering Cottages/Chalets. Nestled in a valley between Ficksburg and Clocolan, a visit to this privately owned Reserve is an absolute must. Built from beautiful local stone, the cottages are large, luxurious, tastefully equipped for self-catering, the décor exceptional. French doors and windows lead from both the lounge and the bedrooms onto the covered deck, with magnificent views of the Maluti Mountains. Each house has a Weber Braai. The houses are self-catering and fully serviced on a daily basis. Full English breakfasts are served at Dassie House, the beautifully restored original farmhouse (on request). |

Birding is excellent,
with those Free State "specials" chats and larks in abundance. Blue and white quilled korhaan are resident, secretary birds a frequent sighting. Large flocks of water fowl, waders and comical guinea fowl are seen daily on dams and in the fields, and blue crane a rare and stunning sight. |

A 2ha dam is stocked with trout, and adjacent deep water quarry with black bass and carp. A further 5ha dam is stocked with rainbow trout, black bass, and that latest of fly fishing fun, barbel. Catch and release is encouraged, only fly fishing methods and equipment
are permitted and each cottage has a bag limit charged per kilogram
for take-home catch. |

From N1 Kroonstad: Stay on N1 to Ventersburg, just before Winburg turn left N5 (Durban) 10 kms turn right R708 Marquard, straight through to Clocolan, turn left (opposite Shell Garage) S343 gravel road, 14 kms, follow signboards. From Bloemfontein: Bypass Ladybrand, drive 34 kms, turn left at the signpost for Clocolan, 50 metres t-junction, turn left R708, 3 kms turn right S343 gravel rd, 14 kms follow signboards. The Verkeerdevlei Toll Rd can also be used, turn right at Verkeerdevlei signboard, turn left at Excelsior follow R703 pointers to Clocolan, t-junction in town, turn left, straight over onto S343 gravel road, as above. From Bethlehem: R26, bypass Ficksburg Village, approximately 16 kms from end of village turn right at small signboard S927, 1 km, turn left onto S40 gravel road, 14 kms follow signboards.
