The self catering cottages below Spitskop, dwarfed by dramatic clouds.

If you are looking for self catering accommodation close enough to be easily accessible, far enough to be remote, private, secluded,in a setting vast, timeless, with great silence, this is the place for you. The beautiful stone self catering accommodation, spacious and classy, tastefully furnished with big comfy couches, windows and doors to give optimal enjoyment of the view, huge open fireplaces, king size beds with beautiful percale linen, this is exactly what you will find here at Amohela ho Spitskop Country Retreat & Conservancy.

The 420 acre Retreat is nestled in a valley between the small rural farming villages of Ficksburg and Clocolan. Here in the Highlands one day it was winter, the next suddenly it is summer, with blossoms everywhere, great fronds of purple wisteria popping out and the birds are making whoopee. In the Eastern Free State, the areas in particular around Ficksburg and Clocolan, it is Cherry Country, and Ficksburg hosts the oldest crop festival in South Africa, The Cherry Festival, in November every year. Cherry picking starts in late October, and if those luscious dark juicy seductive cherries are your passion, now is the time to secure your accommodation for the cherry extravaganza. Amohela is some 30 kms from Ficksburg, a beautiful drive. The festival is fun and exciting and noisy and has cherry pip spitting contests, a large tent with stalls selling every kind of cherry product possible, with boxes and boxes of fresh cherries. There are picnic baskets for lunching in the fields and cherry farms to visit. If all the noise and excitement is not for you and well that may be if you are attracted to our beautiful remote Conservancy, then think of the weekends leading up to the festival and even the weekend after the festival.

Locally we have some stunning venues, which are open during the long warm summer days of November, and can be visited in those quieter weekends before and after the very busy festival weekend. There is a wonderful shopping experience just up the road from Amohela ho Spitskop which is an Aladdin's cave of cherry products, great luncheon places and a la carte dinners at the Clocolan Golf Club where plains game wander the greens, shopping for interesting and eclectic craft and art on sale, all just up the road from Amohela ho Spitskop.
